Differential Flow Meters

Introduction : The necessity of efficiency and economy in industrial processes demands accurate measurement of liquids. In water treatment plants metering helps in determining the quantities of water flowing through different units of the plant. Flow measurements are also made to ascertain the quantity of water that is being supplied for domestic or industrial use. It provides useful information for periodic planning of the distribution system and helps in making distribution as equitable as possible. In modern water works practice, meters are extensively used in detection of wastages and leak-ages also.

A Rational Approach To The Design Of Tube Wells

Introduction: A successful performance of a tube well depends on the following factors — (i) Evaluation of the aquifer potential (i.e. transmissibility, storage coefficients, existence of boundaries, re. charge, etc.) (ii) Design of well structure (i.e. well casing and well screens). (iii) Construction, development and ope-ration of wells, and (iv) Selection of pumping equipment. In this article, salient design features of the screened well have been discussed. A good design of tube well aims at optimum combination of performance, long service life and reasonable cost..

Diatomite Filtration : Practice

Following their early use by the U.S. Army in World War If, though the diatomite filters have been used in U.S.A. for high rate swimming pool water filtration and also for Municipal water filtration, the water works engineers in India, may have their own doubts about the use of this type Filter for the following reasons : i) Lack of reliable and adequate data suitable for conditions available in India for evaluating diatom type filter performance over a wide range of water qualities. (ii) Unfamiliarity with diatom filters and their principles of operation. (iii) A belief that this type filter may be difficult and expensive to operate and that raw water may pass unfiltered through the thin layer of diatomite on the filter septum....

New 6 Mgd Water –treatment Plant For Quality Control

Nasik City, having the population of 1,30,000, is the head quarters of Nasik district in Maharashtra Stale and a well known pilgrim centre in the Western India. To meet its growing demand of water supply,  the Public Health Engineering Organisation of Maharashtra State constructed a new 6 mgd. Water treatment plant for the City Municipal Council. It was commissioned on September 2, 1968..

Strengthening Of The Tulsi Dam

The City of Bombay receives its water supply from four lakes, Vaitarna, Tansa, Vihar and Tulsi, and one river source viz: Ulhaa. The Tulsi lake is the smallest having been constructed in the year 1876. it is formed by constructing two darns. One is an earth-en dam on the Vihar lake side with a masonry waste weir. The overflow from this weir discharges into the Vihar lake. The second dam is situated across the Dahisar River in its upper reaches and is built in uncoarsed rubble masonry in lime mortar. In the year 1948, it was revealed that the masonry darns, constructed by the Bombay Municipal Corporation in the last century and designed in consultation with Prof. Rankine, had no provision against possible uplift pressure. This fact was verified by working out details of stability analysis....

Water Sampling For Quality Control

It is gratifying to note that water-works Engineers are becoming increasingly quality-conscious of the water they are supplying 0 and are taking added interest in the adoption of latest methods and techniques of treatment of water. As a part of their routine duties, they collect samples of water from different points in the supply system and send these to laboratories attached to Public Health Departments for analysis, trying their best to control the quality of water and bringing it to the standards prescribed by the local Public Health authorities. How-ever, it is observed that often the sampling program is neither properly planned nor executed which results in poor and/or deceptive results, waste of funds and energy directed to this work.
